Basic Virgil Paperbacks
Suggested readings. If you're new to Virgil, or you're more interested in modern interpretations of Virgil's poetry, you might want to bookmark this site for later and visit Basic Virgil Paperbacks instead. There you'll find a short list of books suitable for non-specialists, with descriptions and cover photos for each title. See also Shirley Werner's Bibliographical Guide to Vergil's Aeneid

News flash: the seventh edition (2006) of this bibliography is on it's way, but it's not here yet. I do, however, have a working draft online in Portable Document Format (PDF). Now, back to our regularly scheduled excuses.
The online bibliography was getting long, and therefore taking longer to download. Accordingly, I have broken it down into multiple pages, disposed in frames. Your browser, unfortunately, doesn't support frames. You have THREE options: you can look at the bibliography in the old, one-page format, or you can download the file in Rich Text Format (RTF) and import it into your favorite word processor. Or you can select the individual pages from here:
Introduction | Late Antiquity | Vitae | Servius |
Middle Ages | Medieval Commentaries | Medieval Adaptations | DanteRenaissance | Renaissance Printing History | Renaissance Translations | Renaissance Imitations | Renaissance Imitations (Criticism) | Renaissance Commentaries | Petrarch | Landino | Spenser | Back to virgil.org
